WARP films

WARP films are an independent film company based in Sheffield and London, it was founded by Steve Beckett and Rob Mitchell. WARP made the 2006 film "This is England". The film was distributed by a company called optimum releasing, which later rebranded to be called studio canal. The film titled simply "this is England" was released in 2006 before the series called "this is England '86" which was released in 2010. A few other series were also released under similar tiles over the course of the next few years. This is England was directed by Shane Meadows who also directed the multiple series.

The film itself centres around a 12-year-old boy called Shaun played by Thomas Turgoose who lives in a grim coastal town. Shaun's father also died in the Falkland's war leaving him without a father figure. The Falklands war was an undeclared war between Spain and the UK in 1982 which spanned 10 weeks, it was over two British dependant territories in the south Atlantic. His lack of a role model leads him to find new ones, in the form of the local skinhead scene. Skinheads are a subculture of the working class, often sporting Dr. martens and shaven heads, hence the name. Shaun is introduced to Combo who is played by Stephen Graham, an older, racist, skinhead that was recently released from prison. Combo's gang harasses the local ethnic minorities in the town, and he includes young Shaun in this activity.

This film comments on the behaviour of the working class in the 80's and how it was different from today. The TV series follows the casual growing up of Shaun and his friends. The show appears to employ a lighter tone. The director of "This is England", Shane Meadows, also directed "Dead man's shoes" (2004) and "TwentyFourSeven" (1997).

For the release of "This is England", WARP films worked with channel 4 and studio canal. Due to this, the film is now considered as a film4 film and can be accessed through the streaming service "all4". WARP films also work with the BBC and sky Atlantic to release their shows.
