mise en scene elements (stranger things)

Stranger things is set in the 1980s, the way they convey this is through using props like Walkmans, rather than phones, it also uses the appropriate music from the era in order to tell us the year. We are also shown the time through the characters style, which is incredibly reminiscent of the 1980s. the discussion of dungeons and dragons being satanic worship is also another indication of the times as people were more naive and didn't like things they weren't familiar with. these kind of people assist with diegetic effect. the peoples attitudes and clothing being verisimilitude.

I can tell that the genre of this show is a thriller as the trailers are very intense and it shows off it's science fiction theme with the upside down being displayed. the upside down is made believable as its very similar to the real Hawkins but with a dark twist which was made on set.

the appearance of the upside down indicates danger through use of colour and the costume design of vecna, who looks otherworldly and unnatural.

in this scene, the characters proxemics show their team like dynamic as they travel through a dangerous area. Torches in this scene are also an example of hero props.

Here a horror trope is used, this being a point of view shot looking at a main character through a crack in some doors. This creates the feeling of being watched.

You can see a good use of set dressing and colour in order to create an uneasy feeling, using a derelict house and red, which automatically makes the audience associate this place with danger. This also helps with the diegesis of the story.
Vecnas special effects make up makes us feel very uncomfortable as an audience as it is not how any person or animal looks, this also helps with the very thriller/ horror feel that the show employs. The sinister expression also shows his villainous nature.

These bikes are also very typical of the 1980s, creating more verisimilitude for the time period the show is set in through use of hero props. the dim lighting from the street lamps also creates an eerie feel as the characters are in the upside down, another example of set dressing assisting the feel of the show.

blocking is also used here by placing vecna in front of max and moving his hand in front of the camera, obscuring the gateway to safety  in order to cause max to lose all hope. the staging of this scene also has max very close to vecna, looking uncomfortable and distressed, using figure expression to make it clear that she is under threat.

this is a clip from the movie 'never back down', and shows the final climactic fight of the film, figure movement and expression is the main form of mise en scene in this scene. various shots are used and the proxemics of the crowd in relation to the fight shows that the 2 fighters are boxed in. While the main character is being choked out, we see from his point of view and are shown what he sees as he almost slips out of consciousness. this scene is set in a car park just after a fighting tournament, we can infer this based off the car that the main character is slammed onto.
